Vitamins that Promote Hair Growth

Vitamins for hairloss and vitamins that promote hair growth are becoming more sought after in recent years as baby boomers wish to delay the signs of aging. And one of the signs of youth is shiny, healthy hair.

However, we must be frank and state right upfront that there are no such things as vitamins that promote hair growth per se.

What we mean by this is that although there are several vitamins you can take that will improve the health of your hair, and, indeed some of these are even considered vitamins for hairloss, they will only help those people who are suffering a deficiency in these vitamins.

For people who aren't deficient, these vitamins will not regrow hair you're losing unfortunately.

Having said that, let's talk about the vitamins that can improve the health of your hair.

Biotin: Biotin is a B vitamin. If you want healthy hair, skin, and nails, biotin is an important vitamin. Biotin is one of those vitamins for hairloss remedies one often hears about -- however, it will not prevent general hair loss as is sometimes claimed, unless that hair loss is due to a deficiency of the vitamin.

Vitamin B5 and Vitamin B3: Both of these are vitamins that promote hair growth (again, they will not cure thinning or balding hair, but they may help your hair stay healthy and grow). Vitamin B5 is also known as pantothenic acid and B3 is known as niacinamide.

Vitamin E: You've probably heard that vitamin E is good for your skin, but it's also good for your hair as well, which is why it's used in many hair formulas to protect the integrity of your hair. However, putting Vitamin E on your hair won't give you the same benefits as consuming a good source.

Those are some good vitamins that either protect or promote hair growth, but it's been shown there are minerals that are beneficial as well.

For example, zinc is a mineral that may actually help protect against male pattern baldness.

How so?

Well some studies suggest that zinc may counter excess DHT on hair follicles. In case you don't know, one of the primary culprits of male pattern baldness is believed to be caused by the action of excess DHT on hair follicles. It's been suggested that this may also not be just a problem for men, since women lose their hair as well...and women also naturally produce male hormones (such as testosterone), which is at the root cause of excess DHT.
