Let's cover some of the benefits and functions of Omega 3 fatty acids.

Your body uses it to build healthy cells--it's one of the building blocks of cell walls. Your body can't make its own omega fatty acids. It has to rely on food and other sources for the omega 3 that it needs.

Those sources used to be plentiful in the American diet, but modern farming methods and the changing American diet have depleted those sources of omega 3 greatly.

For many of us, the only way to get enough of the omega 3 fatty acids that our bodies needs for optimal health is to take omega 3 capsules or omega 3 pills.

Getting the health benefits of omega 3 is not quite as simple as just taking a few omega 3 capsules a day, though.

To understand how to best take omega 3 pills, and why just adding supplements may not be enough, you need to understand a little about how the body uses omega 3.

There are three kinds of omega 3--alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Before the body can use ALA, it must convert it to EPA and DHA.

However, in many people, particularly the elderly this conversion process is very inefficient. Such people may not get the DHA and EPA they need to promote good health.

Therefore, for your body to get the best use out of omega 3 capsules, you should choose a supplement that contains EPA and DHA rather than ALA. Omega 3 pills containing fish oil are the highest quality, most available assuming the product is of high quality (which we will discuss below).

The best sources of omega 3 fatty acids are cold water fish. Unfortunately, eating fish can be dangerous due to the high levels of mercury in fish today (due to pollution in the Ocean waters).

That's why the FDA now advocates a limited consumption of fish. Farm-raised fish, although they contain less toxic chemicals, are deficient in omega 3 fatty acids because the diets of these farm raised fish are deficient in it. Farm fish are raised on a grain diet--which is high in omega 6 fatty acids, not omega 3.

It's a shame that one of nature's most healthy foods has become potentially unhealthy due to pollution, but the bottomline is that by taking fish oil capsules that are molecularly distilled, you can protect yourself from any pollutants.

In addition to making sure the product you take is molecularly distilled, make sure it's made from a fish that has high concentrations of DHA and EPA. Not all fish sources are equal, and not all of them are going to give you equal levels of these two crucial substances.

Lastly, if you take medications that thin your blood, bleed easily, or have a chronic health condition, you should consult your doctor before beginning to take omega 3 pills since they also have anticoagulant properties.
