All about Horny Goat Weed aka Epimedium

What is Horny Goat Weed?

Epimedium, also known more popularly as horny goat weed, is an herb that belongs to the buttercup family. The plant grows natively to the Mediterranean area, and especially the far East, where it has been used for thousands of years for a variety of therapeutic purposes.

How can it benefit you?

Epimedium has been used for centuries in the far East as a libido enhancer and aphrodisiac. Unlike many other so-called herbal libido enhancers, however, horny goat weed has actually shown very promising results in various studies.

Like another herb, tribulus terrestris, horny goat weed, or epimedium, has the ability to indirectly increase the body’s production of testosterone. Testosterone is the male sex hormone that is responsible for, among other things, a healthy sex drive. Biologically speaking, after the age of 30, a man’s testosterone levels decline by 2% each year. Hence, aging itself is a primary cause of low male libido.

In addition to functioning as a libido enhancer, epimedium, or horny goat weed, has been used historically for a variety of other medicinal purposes, such as treating asthma, bronchitis, and even heart related diseases. Its efficacy here most likely stems from an ability to dilate —- that is, enlarge -- blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more readily.

Horny goat weed, or epimedium, can be taken in several forms: the leaves of the plant can be dried and steeped to make a tea; it can be taken as a capsule or tablet supplement; or it can be taken in via an oral sublingual delivery system. In most cases, there is no benefit in taking a sublingual liquid as opposed to a capsule or tablet supplement.

However, in the case of an herbal libido enhancer, a sublingual delivery has greater efficacy because it can get into the bloodstream more directly and quickly whereas a supplement must first pass through the digestive system, delaying and diminishing its effects, and partly being destroyed by stomach acids.
