Information on Echinacea: Immune System Booster
What is Echinacea?
Echinacea is a wildflower that has nine different species, but only three of which have any therapeutic properties. The petals of the flower are red to purple, and the plant grows native to the Mid-Western and Central United States.
Because of its rich red or purple coloration and numerous health benefits, it is also considered a red phytonutrient.
Although it has only been in the past few years that this medicinal plant has been getting news coverage, its history of use spans centuries.
Early settlers and Indian tribes, for example, prized Echinacea and used it primarily as a wound healing agent.
Echinacea benefits
Echinacea's resurgent popularity has positioned it as one of the currently most demanded herbal remedies in the world. Nowadays, it is promoted and used principally to boost the immune system.
As such, people who are suffering from a compromised immune system condition, such as the common cold, the flu, or a virus, often take Echinacea.
Unlike some other so-called herbal remedies that have no proven scientific efficacy, yet remain popular, Echinacea has been confirmed in various studies to reduce the possibility of catching a cold, or lessen the severity of
symptoms in those who already caught one. Similar results were noted in patients with the flu.
Echinacea's immune system boosting properties are believed to come from its ability to increase the body's production of a naturally occurring compound called interferon, which is in charge of countering viruses and bacteria.
Other benefits include alleviating cold cores, sinus infections, chronic fatigue, vaginal yeast, and many types of wounds.
Echinacea Precautions
There is no known toxicity, and it is considered to be a very safe herb. Because it is not considered an essential nutrient, there is no RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) set.
Some experts, however, argue that Echinacea should be cycled. That is, it should be taken for 2 months, and then discontinued for up to a week, before resumption. Without this cycling process, it is believed the herb's immune system boosting benefits will be less potent.
The product we use that contains Echinacea is a immune system boosting blend of nutrients. It's called Viral Protec.
