Dandelion Root Supplements
Dandelion root is cultivated in some parts of the world for therapeutic and medicinal uses, especially Europe, and to a lesser extent the United States.
Most people think of dandelion as a nuisance weed, but it has been shown to have various health benefits.
Dandelion Root Supplements
Among the most prominent therapeutic uses for dandelion root supplements include improving digestion and the health of the liver and kidneys.
How does this happen?
It has been shown to help boost the flow and manufacture of bile from the liver to the gallbladder. Because bile acts as a digestive aid, this may in turn help conditions ranging from gallstones to hepatitis
Dandelion may act to cleanse the blood with its nutritive salts it contains; it may also help the body better absorb the mineral iron from foods we eat, which, in turn, may have positive effects for those with anemia.
People with jaundice may benefit from dandelion as well.
Some studies have found that it may lower blood sugar levels...thereby possibly benefiting those with diabetes. However, such studies are still preliminary, and have only been conducted on animals thus far.
The symptoms of endometriosis may also benefit from dandelion because of its beneficial effect on liver function. It can help eliminate excessive estrogen from the body, helping to balance female hormones.
It is also taken for mild constipation because of its natural laxative properties.
Other more speculative benefits of dandelion root supplements include using it to treat cancer.
According to the book "The Healing Power of Vitamins, Minerals, and Herbs from Reader's Digest": "The Japanese have patented a freeze-dried extract of dandelion root to use against tumors; the Chinese are employing dandelion extracts in fighting breast cancer...."
What does dandelion contain that may be responsible for some of its benefits?
It harbors some potential immune boosting nutrients, such as a particular type of insulin naturally present in the root.
