Vitex Chasteberry

Chasteberry herb -- sometimes referred to as vitex chasteberry -- has been used by various cultures for centuries for a variety of therapeutic purposes.

A couple of the more prominent cultures that utilized this herb were the Romans and Egyptians.

Chasteberry extract is now encapsulated as supplements or taken as a tincture and has a strong demand.

The Uses and Benefits

Vitex Chasteberry is used nowadays primarily for helping to regulate the female reproductive system.

Chasteberry herb is used to balance hormones in women -- helping to restore estrogen to progesterone balance. It is also taken for menstrual and menopausal symptoms, such as alleviating PMS, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, cramping, and so forth.

It has also been reported to help with: normalizing periods, and premenstrual symptom and stress, stimulating the release of Leutenizing Hormone, and helping with irregular menstruation. Herbs with similar function to chasteberry extract include: dong quai and black cohosh.

Another purported use for vitex chasteberry is during the first three months of pregnancy. It is said to help prevent miscarriage and help regulate the ovulatory cycle. It is not suggested for use after the third month.

In our opinion, pregnant women need to be especially cautious and not take any dietary supplements, including chasteberry extract supplements, without first getting their physician's approval.

Some studies hint that chasteberry may be of benefit for acne as well, but more research is needed.

Do not expect any overnight miracles with chasteberry supplements. Results normally take several months to achieve.
